Nepal Earthquake: Tremors Halt Metro Services in Delhi, Kolkata

Delhi's Metro service was halted at 12.38 pm today, soon after a big earthquake measuring 7.4 on the Richter scale hit Nepal today, with tremors were felt across much of North and East India, including the capital.

Six military aircraft are operational in Kathmandu but India hopes to push the figure to 13 by tonight, Foreign Secretary S Jaishankar said after a review of relief operations following the devastating earthquake in Nepal. Over 2,400 people died after a 7.9 magnitude earthquake on Saturday. More than 60 people died in India.

Metro services in Kolkata were shut down for nearly 50 minutes as a precautionary measure on Wednesday, following the high intensity earthquake that hit the Sumatra coast, which was felt across the metropolis. The services were suspended from 2.42 PM to 3.30 PM, the Deputy General Manager (general) of Metro Railway, Pratyush Sinha told PTI.
