From the daily struggles of autorickshaw drivers to trafficking and abuse of women to blatant use of child labour in hotels, Durga puja committees in Kolkata have highlighted different social issues to generate awareness among people.

A taxi driver has been arrested in Kolkata's southern outskirts over alleged abduction and rape of a shelter home inmate, a senior police officer said on Sunday.

Women in Delhi and Jaipur have done it. Now women in Kolkata are going to breach a male bastion and hit the streets as chauffeurs. Lending them a hand are two NGOs and their project - Women on Wheels. Their objective is to empower disadvantaged women by teaching them to drive as professionals.

Her father, a driver, died when she was 13. She has epilepsy but wanted to learn karate. She did and won medals in India and abroad. The US-based Independent Television Service or ITVS, that has won Emmys in the past, is working on a documentary on women who inspire which will now feature the story of Kolkata's 19-year-old Ayesha Noor.
