Two new studies published in the journal Science have claimed the Tonga volcanic eruption to be the biggest explosion in last 140 years. It was comparable in terms of atmospheric intensity only to the Krakatau eruption, which took place in Indonesia in 1883. More than 30,000 people are believed to have died in that catastrophic event.

Indonesia is set to install buoys and cable base tsunameters (CBT) near Mount Krakatau volcano on Wednesday to give early warning when tidal waves occur near the volcano, officials said.

Indonesian authorities warned on Wednesday of "extreme weather and high waves" around the erupting Anak Krakatau volcano, urging people to stay away from the coast already devastated by a tsunami that killed more than 400 people.

Most of Krakatau was destroyed in the cataclysm, but another island - Anak Krakatau, or "child of Krakatau" - began forming in 1927 and has erupted several times. The latest was on Saturday and potentially caused the tsunami that hit coastlines along Indonesia's Sunda Strait and killed more than 200 people
