Kulgam Avalanche

The body of a policeman, who was missing after an avalanche near the Jawahar Tunnel in Jammu and Kashmir's Kulgam district on Thursday, was found on today. The number of dead has now risen to eight.

A day after a massive avalanche hit a police post near the Jawahar Tunnel along the Srinagar-Jammu National Highway, rescuers on Friday found three survivors and recovered seven bodies buried under mounds of snow and debris of a destroyed police post.

Ten people have gone missing after a police post was hit by an avalanche near the Jawahar tunnel along the Srinagar-Jammu national highway in Kulgam district. The 10 include six policemen, two fire service personnel and two civilians.

Police on Wednesday rescued 80 people, including 33 children, from a village in Kulgam district in the wake of apprehensions of avalanches after the area was cut-off due to snowfall.

The Indian Army has successfully managed to rescue at least nine more people trapped in avalanche-hit areas of Jammu and Kashmir. While seven people have been rescued from Kulgam, two others were evacuated from Shopian.
