On the back of the Indian government’s revamped production-linked incentive (PLI) scheme promising an outlay of Rs. 17,000 crore for IT hardware, Asus set up a new manufacturing unit in Chennai last year. It’s early days, but Asus aims to ramp up local production in the coming years.

HP is collaborating with Google to manufacture Chromebooks in India to meet local requirements, the PC maker said on Thursday. The Chromebook devices will be manufactured at the company's Flex Facility near Chennai, Tamil Nadu.

The government has received 38 applications for the PLI Scheme 2.0 for IT hardware of which over 25 are domestic companies, said IT and communications Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw on Wednesday during a press conference.

Union Electronics and Information Technology Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw on Wednesday said that an excellent response has been received for the production of laptops and PCs under the hardware Production Linked Incentive Scheme (PLI).

The Union Cabinet on Wednesday approved a Rs. 17,000 crore-incentive to boost local manufacturing of IT hardware like tablets and laptops, and the scheme is projected to generate an incremental production worth Rs. 3.35 lakh crore over a period of six years.
