Acting tough on illicit liquor manufacturers, the Uttar Pradesh government has decided to add a new section in the Excise Act to provide for death penalty for spurious liquor makers if its consumption causes death or permanent disability.

27 people have died on the outskirts of Uttar Pradesh's capital Lucknow after consuming spurious liquor on Monday. Over 80 people have also been reportedly admitted to various hospitals.

The toll in the illicit liquor tragedy at Azamgarh in Uttar Pradesh rose to 39 today as two more people died during treatment, officials said. The police arrested two people for supplying the toxic stuff to local vends.
