Eight railway stations in the Lucknow division of Northern Railways were officially renamed after saints and freedom fighters on Tuesday, officials said.

The stations were renamed after a demand was made by former Amethi MP Smriti Irani to preserve the cultural identity and heritage of the place.

A video of the newly opened Ayodhya Dham railway station in poor upkeep has gone viral on social media, prompting the Railways to impose a hefty fine on the station's sanitation contractor.

The Prime Minister will also dedicate to the nation three railway projects worth Rs 2300 crore to strengthen rail infrastructure in the region.
