After a break, the Southwest Monsoon is again set to enter an active phase, M Rajeevan, Secretary of Ministry of Earth Sciences said on Sunday, noting that forecast models show signs of increasing rain activity from July 8.

Heavy rains are expected over the central plains and the western coast on August 6 due to a low-pressure area, Ministry of Earth Sciences Secretary M Rajeevan said on Saturday.

In the wake of tropical cyclones and severe weather events in Kerala and Karnataka coasts, the centre has proposed to set up a Cyclone Warning Centre in Thiruvananthapuram, Secretary in the Ministry of Earth Sciences (MoES) M Rajeevan said today.

A top central government official said today that the India Meteorological Department's warning of "severe" thunderstorm in Delhi and the National Capital Region on May 8 had caused widespread panic, and that the weather office had gone "overboard."

The government is exploring the possibility of setting up a tsunami early warning system (TWS) in the South China Sea, which has been witnessing growing Chinese assertiveness.
