Asking Prime Minister Narendra Modi to take a cue from UK government's warning that migrants on spousal visas who fail to speak English may face deportation, Shiv Sena today said madrassas in India should be barred from using Urdu and Arabic as medium of instruction and they should be replaced with English and Hindi.

The Centre on Friday sought to allay the apprehensions sparked by the BJP-led Maharashtra government's decision to de-recognise madrasas which give students education only on religion, saying madrasas "are a reality of India" and that "there should be no politics on the issue".

The Maharashtra government has said that Madrasas or schools for Islamic instruction, and any other institutions in the state that do not offer formal education will not be recognised as schools and will not be eligible for state funding until they teach subjects like Science, Math and Social Sciences.
