The Eknath Shinde-led Maharashtra government could reduce the Value Added Tax on petrol and diesel because previous finance minister Ajit Pawar kept the state's economy in a good shape, the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) said on Thursday.

Maharashtra government has decided to reduce the retail price of petrol and diesel from tomorrow by Rs. 5 and Rs. 3, respectively.

Following the reduction of central excise duty a few states have now additionally announced a reduction of VAT (Value Added Tax) on petrol and diesel, namely Maharashtra, Kerala, and Rajasthan.

Just a day after central government announced reduction in excise duty on petrol and diesel, Maharashtra government has gone on to reduce VAT on petrol by Rs. 2.08 and on diesel by Rs. 1.44.

To protest against rising prices of petroleum products and also to mark Dr B R Ambedkar's birth anniversary, a local organization sold petrol at just Re 1 per litre to 500 persons in Maharashtra's Solapur city on Thursday.
