Makar Sankranti Pilgrims

As Sabarimala reopens for Mandala-Makaravilakku (Makar Sankranti) festival, the Kerala health minister Veena George said on Sunday that the department has made elaborate arrangements for pilgrims in order to combat the possible spread of COVID-19.

2021 Makar Sankranti: India is celebrating Makar Sankranti today. Since early morning, thousands of pilgrims are at the bathing ghats (banks)of the Ganga in Prayagraj, Haridwar and other places for the holy dip and rituals. Devotees are taking a dip at the confluence of the Ganga and the Bay of Bengal at Gangasagar as well.

Around 18 lakh pilgrims from different parts of the country, and neighbouring Bangladesh and Nepal took holy dip at the confluence of the sacred Ganga and the Bay of Bengal in Sagar Island on the occasion of Makar Sankranti on Wednesday.

In an electrifying setting, thousands of pilgrims took a dip at Sangam - the confluence of Ganga, Yamuna and the mystical Saraswati - at daybreak as the Kumbh Mela officially started today on Makar Sankranti. The Kumbh is the largest congregation of pilgrims in the world; over 12 crore are expected this year.

At least 16 lakh pilgrims took the holy dip at Gangasagar on the occasion of Makar Sankranti today and offered puja at the Kapil Muni temple, West Bengal Panchayat and Rural Development Minister Subrata Mukherjee said.
