Malaria Free Country

The World Health Organization has certified Sri Lanka free of malaria, the second country in the region to earn the distinction after the Maldives, the health ministry said Tuesday.

For a country that receives four times as much rainfall than India, eliminating malaria is no mean feat. But that is exactly what Sri Lanka has achieved, the World Health Organisation or WHO declared on Monday.

Six countries in Africa, the continent where malaria is most widespread, could be free of the disease by 2020, according to a WHO report published Monday to mark World Malaria Day.
