Malda Baby Deaths

Three more babies died at the Malda Medical College and Hospital today, taking the total number of crib deaths in the facility to 16 in the past three days.

With the death of four children on Tuesday, altogether 23 crib deaths were reported from Malda Medical College and Hospital in Malda district since Saturday, hospital sources said.

Nine babies died within a space of 12 hours at the Malda Medical College and Hospital in the district where barely two months back 20 newborns had died. There seems to be no end in sight to the horror of infant deaths in West Bengal. From Malda, which recently witnessed the shocking death of 15 babies within 48 hours at a government hospital, the focus has now shifted to Murshidabad. 10 newborns have died in the last two days in a state-run hospital in Behrampore in the district.

The infant death toll during the last seven days has risen to 21 with five more new-borns dying today in the government-run Malda Sadar Hospital here, according to acting superintendent of the hospital M A Rashid.

While three children died in the hospital today, six other deaths occurred during Thursday-Friday, acting Superintendent Dr R R Samanta said, adding that most of them were new-born babies.

Underlining yet again the poor health infrastructure in West Bengal's government hospitals, six babies have died in a Malda district hospital, officials said on Thursday.
