The BJP's strategy to win civic elections in Maharashtra's Muslim-dominated Malegaon by fielding 27 candidates from that community has not quite worked, but the party is celebrating its victory in seven wards in the Corporation. It had won none in the last elections five years ago.

After dominating local elections in other parts of Maharashtra, the ruling BJP is now eyeing wins in three other towns where civic body elections are being held today. These include the Muslim-majority Malegaon and Bhiwandi and the party has fielded a record number of candidates from the community.

Polling is on in three municipal corporations of Bhiwandi, Malegaon and Panvel in Maharashtra today. A total of 1,251 candidates are in the fray in the three civic agencies, where voting began today morning.

In a first in Maharashtra elections, drones will be deployed as the eye in the sky to monitor the Malegaon Municipal Corporation elections on Wednesday, a top official said.
