Malnourished Children In Gujarat

Over 33 lakh children in India are malnourished and more than half of them fall in severely malnourished category with Maharashtra, Bihar and Gujarat topping the list, the Ministry of Women and Child Development has said in response to an RTI query

The Comptroller and Auditor General of India has said the Gujarat government has shown low number of malnourished children in the state by adopting different methodologies for calculation from those of World Health Organisation (WHO) and the National Family Health Survey (NFHS).

The Gujarat government spends Rs 6 per "normal" child and Rs 9 for "highly malnourished" ones every day on food for children enrolled in Anganwadis in the state.

The Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) has lambasted the working of the Integrated Child Development Scheme (ICDS) in Gujarat, which is aimed at fighting malnutrition among children, saying that every third child in the state is underweight.
