An 18-year-old man was killed after a stray chinese ''manja'' slit his throat while he was riding his bike in north Delhi's Timarpur area, police said Tuesday.

The Delhi government yesterday directed the departments concerned to strictly implement the ban on glass-coated threads or Chinese manja in view of large scale kite-flying in the city on the occasion of Independence Day and Raksha Bandhan.

The National Green Tribunal today imposed a complete ban on 'manja', the string used to fly kites, made of nylon or any synthetic material which is non-biodegradable, saying it posed a threat to the lives of birds, animals and humans.

Ahead of Sankranti festival, Maharashtra government has banned the use of manja' (kite string, mostly made of nylon these days) which is known to cause injuries to birds and even people.
