Manmohan Singh Writes To Jayalalithaa

Taking a serious view of the latest arrest of 32 fishermen by Sri Lankan Navy ahead of talks over contentious fishing rights in Palk Strait, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa today sought the intervention of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh in securing the release of all 153 fishermen detained in the island nation.

In a letter to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh yesterday, she referred to the arrest of 19 Tamil Nadu fishermen two days back and said she was at a "loss of words to convey my deep anguish over the repeated apprehension and incarceration" of a large number of fishermen."

Asking the Centre to take a strong line and prevail upon the Sri Lankan Government to end "unprovoked" attacks and arrests of Indian fishermen, Tamil Nadu has said such "unabated" attacks "will not make for a congenial atmosphere" for proposed talks between representatives of fishing community of two sides next month.

Expressing dismay over reports of Indian Coast Guard participating in naval exercises with Sri Lankan Navy, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa today asked Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to recall the two ships and Coast Guard personnel participating in the event in the island nation.
