Maritime Dialogue With China

In a significant move, India has proposed a bilateral maritime dialogue with China primarily to find a common ground in the Indo-Pacific region which is witnessing rapidly evolving security dynamics.

China has said it wants to step up maritime cooperation and dialogue with India and other South Asian countries to allay their concerns over increased Chinese naval activity in the Indian Ocean including docking of its submarines in different ports in the region.

Ahead of this week's annual Defence Dialogue, China has expressed its readiness to work with India to link its ambitious Maritime Silk Route plans with India's 'Mausam' project in a bid to address New Delhi's strategic concerns and derive "common benefits".

In what comes as a huge confidence-building measure, India and China today decided to begin a dialogue on maritime issues. The proposal for talks, a first for both neighbours, was mooted by the visiting Chinese foreign minister, Yang Jiechi, during his meeting with his Indian counterpart, SM Krishna.
