Mass Cleanliness Drive

With 100 deaths in Kerala this year due to fever, and hospitals overcrowded with nearly 7,000 dengue patients, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan has called for a series of urgent sanitation measures. Ordering "massive cleanliness drives", he has appointed a minister in-charge of every district to oversee progress on ensuring cleanliness and hygiene.

The rain water level may be receding in the city bringing relief to people but it is leaving a huge trail of mess, prompting the Chennai Municipal Corporation to launch a mass cleanliness drive for all its 200 wards today, for which some of the civic bodies from the neighbouring districts have also lend a helping hand to.

Union Minister Mahesh Sharma today announced that AAI would provide Rs 5 crore for cleanliness mission in Varanasi, carrying forward the "special drive" under the Swachh Bharat Mission and said "mass support" is needed for its success.

There has been improvement in water quality of the Ganga after a mass cleanliness and awareness drive conducted by Shantikunj, a Haridwar-based spiritual organisation.
