Senior Congress leader Husain Dalwai has appealed to the Centre to reinstate the Maulana Azad National fellowship and the pre-matriculation scholarship scheme for minority community students.

Congress member K Suresh on Friday termed the scrapping of the Maulana Azad National Fellowship (MANF) scheme as an "anti-minority" move by the Narendra Modi government.

Last week, in a written reply in the Lok Sabha, Minority Affairs Minister Smriti Irani announced the decision to discontinue the Maulana Azad National Fellowship from the 2022-23 academic session, saying it overlapped with various other fellowship schemes for higher education.

In a written reply in Lok Sabha, Minority Affairs Minister Smriti Irani had said the government provided fellowship for higher education through various schemes, including the Maulana Azad National Fellowship, implemented by different ministries or departments.

Raising the demand during a discussion on the supplementary demands for grants, BSP MP Danish Ali said the pre-matric scholarship and Maulana Azad Fellowship must be restored.

The issue was also raised in the winter session of the parliament, where Congress MP TN Prathapan called the discontinuation of the scheme "an anti-minority move".

The UGC NET result was declared on Tuesday. A total of 47,157 candidates have qualified the exam.
