Diesel price hike: Mayawati asks govt to rethink its decision

Observing that a hike in diesel prices would lead to an all-round inflation, Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) chief Mayawati on Friday asked the central government to rethink its decision to allow state-run oil marketing companies to revise diesel rates.

If you tanked up your diesel car this morning, you paid 45 paise plus local taxes a litre more. After they were given the freedom to make what the government calls "minor price corrections" yesterday, oil marketing companies immediately raised the price of diesel and have announced that it will go up a bit every month.

Bahujan Samaj Party chief Mayawati today stunned the Rajya Sabha when she attacked Vice President Hamid Ansari during House proceedings, accusing him of dereliction of duty. Outside Parliament, an unrepentant Mayawati warned that her outburst was a "first tough step."

The government today won the vote on its controversial decision to allow foreign direct investment or FDI in multi-brand retail. Out of the 232 members present and voting, 123 voted with the government and 109 voted against FDI.

After two days of stormy debate, lawmakers in the Lok Sabha voted in favour of the government's big policy decision to open up the country's highly-protected retail industry to foreign chains such as Walmart. 471 of the Lok Sabha's 545 members voted; 253 MPs voted against the BJP motion that challenged the policy and 218 voted for it.
