More than three weeks after an illegal coal pit in Meghalaya's East Jaintia district was flooded trapping five miners, rescuers on Friday fished out another body from the 152-metre-deep mine, an official said.

Four miners were killed inside an illegal coal mine in Nagaland on Sunday. The mine is in a remote village close to the border with Assam. The incident comes over two months after at least 15 miners were trapped in an illegal coal mine in Meghalaya.

The Supreme Court on Friday issued notice to the owner of a coal mine in Meghalaya where 15 people have been trapped for nearly two months saying he was responsible for the illegal mining due to which the incident took place.

NDTV found that some freshly cut coal stocks were being loaded onto trucks from a new rat-hole mine in the same district where the rescue operations are going on. Across East Jaintia Hills, cranes and freshly mined coal left behind by miners are a common sight. The area is dotted with palatial bungalows of local coal barons.

In the last few weeks, the rat hole mine incident in Meghalaya has exposed the illegal mining of coal rampant here despite a carpet ban since 2014. Fifteen miners continue to be trapped inside a flooded 320-feet coal mine which collapsed 16 days ago. But almost all political parties in Meghalaya want the ban to go.
