Karnataka Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai on Sunday said he is committed to resolve all the water disputes including the contentious Mekedatu balancing reservoir across Cauvery river, Mahadayi drinking water project.

BJP raised the pitch demanding that neighbouring Karnataka should not go ahead with the balancing reservoir project which aims to meet both drinking water needs and power generation.

Basavraj Bommai said everyone is aware that the project is for drinking water, power generation and for the sharing of water during the distress period.

Karnataka Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai maintained that the state will get the Centre's approval and implement the Mekedatu drinking water project over the Cauvery river, notwithstanding any opposition from neighbouring Tamil Nadu.

Karnataka's plan of building a drinking water project on Cauvery river at Mekedatu has led to tensions with Tamil Nadu. Sharing of the river water has been a sore point between the neighbouring states for decades.

Mekedatu, meaning 'goat crossing' or 'goat leap' in Kannada, refers to a rocky, narrow area of the Cauvery river in southern Karnataka. It is here that the state government wants to build a reservoir for storing water meant to generate electricity and provide drinking water to Bengaluru as well as its neighbouring areas.

Many commercial establishments remained shut in various parts of Karnataka today after a bandh was called by Kannada organisations to protest Tamil Nadu's opposition to Mekedatu drinking water project across the river Cauvery.

Normal life in Karnataka is likely to be affected today as pro-Kannada outfits have called for a statewide dawn-to-dusk bandh to protest Tamil Nadu's opposition to Mekedatu drinking water project across the inter-state river Cauvery.

Tamil Nadu on Wednesday urged the Centre to advise Karnataka not to take up any irrigation, hydro power projects, including the proposed Mekedatu drinking water project in Cauvery basin as it violates the final orders of the Cauvery Water Disputes Tribunal and affects the interest of its farmers.
