Describing India as a "messenger of peace", Prime Minister Narendra Modi today said the country has always contributed towards global peace, unity and harmony through UN missions across the world.

United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres appointed Nobel laureate Malala Yousafzai a United Nations Messenger of Peace on Monday to promote girls education, more than four years after a Taliban gunman shot her in the head on her school bus in 2012.

Asked to comment on the incident, Sami told IANS here: "It's a very tragic thing. Musicians, irrespective of the place they belong to, are messengers of peace. When you start to silence messengers of peace, then I think you need to wake up and smell the coffee because it's staring you in the face."

India is the most significant messenger of peace, and is the best example of co-existence and peaceful living, said the Dalai Lama, who is on a trip to England. The Tibetan spiritual leader also praised Indian Muslims.
