Mexico will analyze skeletal remains from an undetermined number of individuals that were found not far from where 43 Mexican students went missing nearly two years ago, officials said Thursday.

Forensic experts have identified one of 43 missing Mexican students among charred remains found in a landfill, an official said Saturday, partly solving a case that has roiled the government for weeks.

Drug gang members have described a horrific effort to make 43 teachers college students disappear, piling their bodies like cord wood on a pyre that burned for 15 hours and then wading into the ashes to pulverize, bag and dispose of remaining teeth and bones.

Mexico's government said on Friday evidence suggests that 43 missing trainee teachers were murdered and their charred remains tipped in a rubbish dump and a river in southwest Mexico, based on the confessions of three detained gang members.
