Desperate to return home, stranded migrants in Chhattisgarh's Raipur have been hitching rides on trucks daily, calling it their "only option" to avoid a long walk to home amid a countrywide lockdown over coronavirus.

Men, women and children are walking, hundreds of kilometres, along the road connecting Mumbai and the neighboring town of Bhiwandi, towards their villages in other states or within Maharashtra. The migrant workers are choosing to taking the journey by foot, saying the wait for the special trains organised by the government is too long.

Over 100 migrant labourers hailing from Uttar Pradesh started walking to their native villages from here on Monday, prompting the local administration to intervene which sent them back to their rented accommodations amid the third phase of the nationwide lockdown.

Three members of a family of daily-wage labourers, who were walking all the way home to their village in Uttar Pradesh from Delhi were killed in a tragic accident on the outskirts of Aligarh on Friday, police said.
