Investments of nearly Rs 1,000 crore on the National Monsoon Mission and the High Performance Computing programme of the Ministry of Earth Sciences (MoES) over the past five years have generated economic benefits worth Rs 50,000 crore for farmers, livestock rearers and fishermen, a survey has shown.

The rising sea levels, as shown from satellite data received from European Space Agency (ESA), is a threat to the millions of people living in coastal regions, said Secretary, Ministry of Earth Sciences (MoES) Madhavan Rajeevan on Sunday.

The government will procure two more supercomputers in order to improve weather forecasting in the country, a top ministry official said on Sunday, adding that the combined computing powers would be eight times the existing capacity.

In the wake of tropical cyclones and severe weather events in Kerala and Karnataka coasts, the centre has proposed to set up a Cyclone Warning Centre in Thiruvananthapuram, Secretary in the Ministry of Earth Sciences (MoES) M Rajeevan said today.

In order to better understand fog formation and dispersion, which can further lead to improved visibility predictions, different arms of the Ministry of Earth Sciences (MoES) will jointly conduct observational experiments in the national capital.
