The BJP on Monday swept the polls to the Mira-Bhayander Municipal Corporation in the Mumbai metropolitan region after it won 61 of the 95 seats, almost double the number the party had won in the 2012 polls which was 31.

Close on the heels of Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) suspending the sale of meat in its markets for four days, now the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation, controlled by the NCP, has announced a similar measure till September 17, as these dates fall within the eight-day Jain fasting period of 'Paryushan'.

After a widely criticized beef ban in Maharashtra, residents in a part of the state will not get any meat for eight days. The slaughter and sale of meat has been temporarily banned in those areas because of a Jain festival starting later this week.
