Gujarat MLA Jignesh Mevani has alleged that a multi-crore scam has surfaced in a village in Banaskantha district of the state, in which bank accounts were opened in the name of around 500 villagers without their knowledge for the transfer of money under the MNREGA scheme, in order to siphon off the funds.

The Gujarat government on Wednesday admitted in the Assembly that in comparison to 2018, over 32 lakh less person-days of work was generated in 2019 in the state under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MNREGA) scheme of the Centre.

The Congress on Monday took a swipe at Prime Minister Narendra Modi over his reported jibe at UPA'S MNREGA scheme, saying the welfare scheme fell prey to corruption in Gujarat during his tenure as Chief Minister, and the party will raise the issue in the Rajya Sabha.
