Twitter was filled with the customary good wishes for each star ahead of Friday - a relief if not for Hrithik, then for his fans because the past week has seen Mohenjo Daro largely ignored as a carefully orchestrated celebrity campaign endorsed Akshay's film.

Movie-goers are in for a history lesson this weekend as two period films - Mohenjo Daro and Rustom - release today

"It was easy to put my faith in his vision the second time over," Hrithik said about director Ashutosh Gowariker.

Hirthik Roshan tweeted a shout out to both his own film, Mohenjo Daro, and Akshay Kumar's movie, Rustom

"In the past we have seen that two big films can run at the same time. We want both the films to do well," said Akshay Kumar

"Lagaan and Gaddar had released on the same date too. So, I feel Mohenjo Daro should also work and Rustom should also work. Both the films should be superhits," Ashutosh Gowariker said.

Rustom, directed by Tinu Suresh Desai, features Akshay Kumar as naval commander Rustom Pavri, a fictionalised version of K M Nanavati who was tried and acquitted for the murder of his wife's lover

Mohenjo Daro, set in the Indus Valley Civilization, will be Hrithik Roshan's first release since 2014's Bang Bang! and co-stars Pooja Hegde, Arunoday Singh and Kabir Bedi

Mohenjo Daro releases on the same day as Akshay Kumar's Rustom and reports suggested that Mr Gowariker had been approached by Rustom's producers to reschedule his film. Mr Gowariker's statement insists that no such negotiations have taken place
