Drones will now monitor railway projects, aid in crowd management and oversee maintenance work across its zones, railway officials said today.

"PMIS is a Web-enabled IT application which would cover the entire life cycle of complex projects."

Indian Railways has used drones for the first time for inspecting a mega rail project to assess the progress on the ground. It would now be used to monitor other under-construction schemes.

The Railways plan to use the latest drone and Geo Spatial-based satellite technology for remotely reviewing the physical progress across major projects, which would become operational in the next fiscal.

Seeking to push infrastructure development, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday asked his ministers to electronically monitor the progress of projects and directed the Railways to submit a comprehensive plan for encouraging FDI.

The CAG in its latest report tabled in Parliament today has found that faulty assessment was made on internal rate of return (IRR), project approvals were marred by delays and there was lack of any monitoring mechanism for these projects.
