The Punjab government paid Rs 5,334 crore to over 1.8 lakh farmers under the minimum support price, or MSP, guarantee in a single day on Friday, the Aam Aadmi Party's (AAP) Bhagwant Mann government said in a statement today.

Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav Monday made several promises to the farmers of Uttar Pradesh including MSP for every crop, free irrigation facilities, payment of arrears to cane-growers in 15 days, interest-free loans, and insurance and pension.

This is the first time that Punjab farmers have started receiving payments directly into their bank accounts against sale of their wheat crop.

Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh has opposed the Centre's scheme to make a direct online payment of the MSP to farmers' bank accounts, bypassing arhtiyas (commission agents), for the crops to be procured by the government from the next Rabi season.
