Mullaperiyar Dam: Tamil Nadu today gained significant ground in a long legal battle with neighbouring Kerala over the controversial dam.

One of the members of the Supreme Court-appointed empowered committee on Mullaperiyar Dam issue Justice A R Lakshmanan, on Monday, said his report submitted in the Sureme Court was "certainly favourable" to Tamil Nadu.

Tamil Nadu Government today said the repair work on the controversial Mullaperiyar dam has resumed after it took up with Kerala the issue of its officials allegedly preventing cement bags meant for the purpose.

Kerala will continue its legal battle in the Supreme Court to enable the construction of a new dam replacing the 116-year-old structure at Mullaperiyar. This depsite the Supreme Court-appointed empowered committee's report asking Kerala to re-consider its demand for a new dam.

Amid reports that the Supreme Court Empowered Committee on Mullaperiyar had found that the 119-year-old Mullaperiyar dam was safe, Kerala Water Resources Minister PJ Joseph on Saturday maintained that a new dam was the only solution to the long dispute with Tamil Nadu.

The five-member Empowered Committee - appointed by the Supreme Court - over the raging controversy on the Mullaperiyar Dam today rejected Kerala's demand to reduce the water level to 120 feet in the disputed structure. The committee said since the Supreme Court had ordered water level to be at 136 feet, it can't reduce the level to 120 feet.

As the controversy over the Mullaperiyar dam rages on, the two-member expert panel constituted by the Supreme Court-appointed Empowered Committee today submitted its report on the safety of the disputed structure. Kerala, however, claimed that the panel's report was biased and opposed its consideration by the five-member committee.
