A number of shops and hotels here downed shutters today protesting Kerala's stand on the Mullaperiyar dam issue. The usually bustling tourist town wore a deserted look with cars not plying and bakeries and other business establishments remaining closed.

A day before the DMK fast, protesters opposing Mullaperiyar dam on Sunday gheraoed Tamil Nadu Finance Minister O Panneerselvam and threw slippers at him near Kumili at the Kerala border after he tried to pacify them following a lathicharge to quell their demonstration, which left 50 persons injured, police said.
