Multiplex operator PVR INOX Ltd reported a quarterly loss of 3.33 billion rupees ($40.72 million) on Monday, hit by one-time impairment charges and expenses related to the planned shutdowns of some cinemas.

INOX Leisure Ltd, India's No.2 multiplex cinema operator, on Wednesday said its second-quarter loss more than halved, as box office and food and beverage revenues inched closer to pre-pandemic levels.

Multiplex operators have urged the Delhi government to reconsider its decision and allow them to operate cinema halls with certain riders such as the requirement of double vaccination to enter halls and restricting seating capacity to 50 per cent.

During the day, PVR share price surged 9 per cent to₹1,212.50 apiece while those of Inox Leisure jumped over 5.5 per cent to ₹279.40 apiece.The Maharashtra government has allowed cinema halls, multiplexes as well as drama theatres to operate with a 50 per cent seating capacity.

Cinema halls in several parts of the country reopened today after seven months in the shadow of the pandemic. Theatres and multiplexes, closed since March because of the coronavirus crisis, recently allowed to resume operations as per guidelines issued under Unlock 5.

Fifty per cent occupancy, staggered show timings in multiplexes, social distancing, thermal screening and frequent sanitization are among the guidelines issued for operation of cinema halls, theatres and multiplexes from October 15. They were recently allowed to resume operations under the Unlock 5 guidelines.

About 9,500 theatres have remained shut since the nationwide coronavirus lockdown started in late March.

Schools and colleges, shut since March as lockdown was announced across the country, will be allowed to re-open from October 15, the Centre said Wednesday while announcing the next phase of lifting of coronavirus-related restrictions.

Maharashtra Home Minister Anil Deshmukh said that the state cabinet will hold a meeting to discuss issue of allowing malls, pubs, multiplexes to remain open 24x7 and accordingly the government will take a decision on the need to increase police force.
