Attempts to smuggle gold worth crores have landed six Indians who arrived from the Gulf in trouble - despite hiding the metal in the form of dust and even in pen refills.

Customs has seized 32.79 kg of gold valued at Rs 19.15 crore concealed in undergarments and luggage of two women foreign nationals at the Mumbai international airport in separate cases, an official said today.

Soon after it came to light that she had been intercepted while trying to smuggle 25 kg of gold worth about Rs 18 crore into India from Dubai, Afghanistan's Consul General in Mumbai has announced that she is stepping down.

A housekeeping staff working at the Mumbai International Airport was arrested by CISF personnel on Thursday with gold worth Rs 2 crore that was concealed in a water bottle, a force spokesperson said.

The Customs department has seized diamonds concealed in packets of noodles and gold hidden in the body parts of passengers and baggage, collectively valued at Rs 6.46 crore, at the Mumbai airport, an official said.

Mumbai Customs on Monday said it seized over 8.10 kg of gold worth Rs 4.81 crores and arrested six passengers.

Sales proceeds from smuggled gold worth Rs 3.62 crore as well as Rs 2.95 crore cash and 2.1 kilograms of gold were seized following a raid by the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence on a gold melting facility and a jewellery shop, an official said.

In a scene that appeared to have leapt out of a film, a group of women attempted to smuggle gold worth over Rs 9 crore into Mumbai airport on Thursday by creating a ruckus to distract authorities. Nine Kenyan women have been arrested in the case.
