No fatal incident involving commuters was reported on Mumbai's suburban rail network on June 26, a rarity in the metropolis where eight to nine passengers die everyday in mishaps.

The Maharashtra government is considering change in office timings to reduce peak hour crowding in suburban local trains which is resulting in many commuter deaths, the Bombay High Court was informed today.

The Central Railway (CR) will soon introduce modified seating arrangement in the coaches of local trains to check the ever increasing deaths of commuters due to falling off the impossibly crowded suburban trains in the Mumbai region.

With nearly 10 people dying on the railway tracks in Mumbai every day and many among them falling off overcrowded local trains, the Bombay High Court on Wednesday came down heavily on the Railways.

The Bombay High Court today rapped the railways for its lackadaisical approach towards safety of passengers and failure to provide better services in suburban local trains.

14 people died on Mumbai's suburban railway system on Sunday as trains were jam packed, forcing many to hang out of the trains.

Twelve men convicted for the 7/11 serial blasts on Mumbai's local trains in 2006, are expected to be sentenced by a court today. The prosecution has said it will seek the strictest punishment, the death sentence or a life term, for those charged with murder.

Even as railway officials claim to be operating maximum suburban trains to ease the hardships of daily commuters in Mumbai, the number of deaths and those injured after falling from trains has gone up in the last one decade, as per an RTI query.

Twelve of 13 men accused of planting bombs on Mumbai's local trains that killed 189 people nine years ago, have been convicted. The prosecution is expected to seek the death sentence or life in prison for the convicts when they will be sentenced on Monday next. One man has been acquitted.
