The CBI on Tuesday announced a Rs 5 lakh reward for information about the 2012 murder of a Right to Information (RTI) activist at Virar in neighbouring Palghar district, an official said.

The murder case of RTI activist Bhupendra Vira, known for his battle against land mafia and encroachers, was on Tuesday handed over to the Crime Branch from Vakola police station, an official said.

A 61-year-old Right to Information activist was killed in Mumbai on the weekend by a man who barged into his home, held a gun to his head and fired. A former corporator of the Congress and his son have been arrested.

CBI has arrested two persons in Mumbai in connection with the 2012 murder of Right to Information (RTI) activist Premkant Jha, who was seeking information about the multi- crore illegal construction industry in the cosmopolitan city.

Back in 2010, the Bombay High Court, while hearing the murder case of Right to Information (RTI) activist Satish Shetty in Maharashtra, ordered the state government to provide police protection to the many activists who complain of threats after filing applications under the RTI Act.

A sessions court on Thursday gave the green signal to the CBI to conduct polygraph tests on 12 persons in connection with the murder of RTI activist Satish Shetty. These 12 include an IRB official and five suspects, who were earlier arrested by the local crime branch of the rural police.
