Assam and Nagaland Chief Ministers Himanta Biswa Sarma and Neiphiu Rio have agreed in principle to go ahead with oil exploration in areas along their disputed boundary for the economic benefit of both states.

In a significant development, Nagaland Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio today said Assam and Nagaland are ready for out-of-court settlement of their decades old state border dispute.

Nagaland wants an amicable settlement of the long standing inter-state border dispute with Assam and has entrusted its border affairs department to work out modalities for discussions with the government of the neighbouring state, an official said.

The governments of Assam and Nagaland today agreed to withdraw forces from the disputed border area in Dessoi Valley reserved forest.
