George Yeo, a former foreign minister from Singapore will be the new chancellor of Nalanda University, announced Indian external affairs ministry today. The 60 year old is currently serving as a member in the governing board of the prestigious university, which was set up in 2010 to revive the ancient seat of learning in Rajgir, Bihar

Opposition parties today slammed the BJP government over Nobel laureate Dr Amartya Sen's decision to withdraw his candidature for a second term as as Nalanda University's Chancellor, saying "dumping" him from the post was a "shame" and a "sad day" for the university.

The union government today rejected Nobel laureate Amartya Sen's contention that it does not want him to continue as Nalanda University Chancellor. The government has clarified that there was no attempt to "curtail" his tenure and claimed that it was yet to receive the approved minutes of the Governing Board of Nalanda University (GBNU).
