Congress MP H Vasanthakumar was arrested for alleged corrupt practices and staying in Nanguneri assembly constituency in the district in ''violation'' of election rules during a bypoll held there on Monday, the police said.

The Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) party on Sunday alleged that 30 Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) meant for the October 21 Nanguneri Assembly by-poll in Tamil Nadu have been "suddenly shifted" for "unknown reasons."

AIADMK candidates announced in Tamil Nadu. MR Muthamizhselvan is the AIADMK candidate from Vikravandi and Reddiarpatti V Narayanan will fight from the Nanguneri constituency.

Five persons were killed on Wednesday when a goods train collided with two motorcycles at an unmanned level-crossing at Tazhaikulam near Nanguneri area of the district in Tamil Nadu, police said.

One person was shot dead in a police encounter in Tirunelvelli district of Tamil Nadu. According to initial reports, a police inspector, who raided an illegal sand quarry near Nanguneri, opened fire in self-defence and killed an alleged gangster. The gangster has been identified as Vanavamalai.
