In its budget published on Wednesday, the Indian government said it would sell unspecified stakes in New India Assurance Co Ltd, United India Insurance Co Ltd, Oriental Insurance Co Ltd, National Insurance Co Ltd, and reinsurer General Insurance Corp of India in the financial year starting in April.

Unseasonal rains, twice in two weeks, have wreaked havoc in lives of farmers in many parts of the country including Uttar Pradesh where 25 out of 80 districts have been affected. To make matters worse the National Corp Insurance Programme or NCIP, which is meant to help the farmers, has been a non-starter.
