Senior Congress leader P Chidambaram on Sunday said an alliance could not be forged between his party and the NCP-Shiv Sena for the Goa Assembly polls despite best efforts but asserted that they "will remain friends".

NCP and Shiv Sena leaders will meet in Goa on Tuesday to discuss a pre-poll alliance between the two parties in the coastal state for the next month's assembly elections, the Sharad Pawar-led outfit said on Monday.

The Shiv Sena, Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) and Congress staked claim to power in Maharashtra on Monday after submitting signatures of support from 162 MLAs to the Governor. The NCP, whose Ajit Pawar claims the party is with the BJP, submitted the signatures of 51 of its 54 MLAs.
