Large-scale protests against the national entrance exam for medical colleges that disrupt normal life or can lead to violence have been disallowed in Tamil Nadu by the Supreme Court today, a directive that could force the opposition to cancel a series of protests planned against the national examination.

The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) today received from the Tamil Nadu government a draft of the proposed ordinance it plans to promulgate to exempt students from the NEET examination for admission to medical colleges in the southern state, a senior official said.

Union Minister Nirmala Sitharaman said that the Centre would co-operate if Tamil Nadu presented an Ordinance seeking exemption for government medical and dental colleges from NEET for one year. Tamil Nadu State Health Minister said that an Ordinance in this regard would be presented to the centre on Monday.
