Delivering a setback to Tamil Nadu, even after its NEET Ordinance, Supreme Court asked the southern state to follow the common entrance scores for medical admission.

Medical colleges in Tamil Nadu will have to use a national and common entrance exam as the only basis for admissions, the Supreme Court said today on the NEET, Tamil Nadu, Ordinance, delivering a big setback for Tamil Nadu.

'Good thing will happen on the issue of getting exemption for the state from the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test,' said Chief Minister K Palaniswami.

Union Minister Nirmala Sitaraman's promise that the Centre would cooperate to exempt Tamil Nadu from National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET), the all-India medical entrance test, for one year if the state government promulgated an Ordinance, has triggered a fresh wave of opposition to the move by students who have cracked the test.

Expressing apprehension that the students who had appeared for NEET in Gujarati might be at disadvantage compared to those attempted the all-India medical test in English during admissions, the Congress leaders today called on Governor O P Kohli and sought his intervention.

The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) today received from the Tamil Nadu government a draft of the proposed ordinance it plans to promulgate to exempt students from the NEET examination for admission to medical colleges in the southern state, a senior official said.

Union Minister Nirmala Sitharaman said that the Centre would co-operate if Tamil Nadu presented an Ordinance seeking exemption for government medical and dental colleges from NEET for one year. Tamil Nadu State Health Minister said that an Ordinance in this regard would be presented to the centre on Monday.

The Kerala government today directed private medical colleges in the state to take admission through National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET). Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan told reporters that an ordinance to this effect was issued keeping in mind the Supreme Court order.
