More than 100 Chinese nationals in Nepal on tourist visas have been detained over a suspected cyber scam, police said Wednesday, in the country's largest ever crackdown involving foreigners.

Hundreds of people today held protest rallies in Nepal and began a mass relay hunger strike to protest the government's crackdown on the supporters of a prominent doctor and activist who has been fasting for nearly a month, demanding reforms in the country's medical sector.

One person has been killed and several injured in firing by the Nepalese police on protesters who had refused to budge from a crucial bridge on the Indo-Nepal border. The Madhesis, who have been protesting against the country's new constitution, returned to the bridge hours after the police used batons to forcibly remove them.

Police in Nepal denied on Tuesday that they had been targeting people with long hair as part of a drive against "hooliganism" in the capital that has seen more than 1,000 people arrested in the last week.

Authorities in Nepal today arrested some 12 people in a stepped up crackdown on casinos allowing locals to gamble, police said.
