Nesting Season

Tamil Nadu has released the highest number of sea turtles into the Bay of Bengal, as the nesting season for the marine species came to an end.

Over 1.8 lakh Olive Ridley turtles laid eggs on the first day of their mass nesting which started near the mouth of Rushikulya river a month ahead of last year's season, forest officials said on Friday.

Over a hundred Olive Ridley turtles have been found dead along Chennai shores in the last two weeks since the nesting season began. Conservationists are worried there could be a three-fold jump in turtle casualty this season due to various reasons, including the use of banned gill nets and mechanised fishing boats.

With the season for mass nesting of Olive Ridley sea turtles approaching, the Odisha government has geared up to ensure safety of the endangered species.
