Ashwini Vaishnaw, the country’s IT and Communications Minister, announced recently that the government is working on a new Data Protection Bill and the Digital India Act. It will also upload a new Telecom Bill in the coming days, the minister stated.

The Personal Data Protection bill, whose first draft was made public last year, is keenly awaited by top technology companies and industry stakeholders as it could alter the way all major internet companies process, store and transfer Indian consumers' data.

Parliament on Tuesday approved a new bill to revamp the process of administration and settlement of consumer disputes, with strict penalties including jail term for adulteration and misleading ads by companies.

Cook called on US lawmakers Thursday to pass privacy legislation enabling consumers to see and delete their harvested online personal data from a central clearinghouse.

Instead of jail term, celebrities endorsing misleading ads will have to pay penalty of up to Rs 50 lakh and serve a ban of up to three years once the new Consumer Protection Bill is cleared by Parliament.

The new law, which will replace current Consumer Protection Act, 1986, once it is passed in Parliament, enforces consumer rights and provides a mechanism for redressal of complaints regarding defect in goods and deficiency in services.

The Centre is working on a new legislation to replace the existing Consumer Protection Act, which will have penal provisions of Rs 50 lakh and five year imprisonment for celebrities promoting sale of items without verifying the quality, Union Minister Ram Vilas Paswan said today.

A research paper has asked for a "detailed revision" of the Consumer Protection Bill, 2015 that was introduced in Parliament to replace the three-decade-old consumer protection law, during the monsoon session last month. The paper has been prepared by Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad.
