Maharashtra Legislative Assembly on Tuesday unanimously passed the government resolution to change the names of railway stations on Central Railway, Western Railway and Harbour Railway.

The Western Railways on Wednesday renamed Elphinstone Road Station to Prabhadevi, on the Mumbai's suburban section. Doing away with the British era name, a notification said the new name will come to effect from the midnight of July 18.

Mumbai's famous Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus (CST), which witnessed the running of the first train in India, has been renamed. Known as VT or Victoria Terminus, the station will now be known as Mumbai Chhatrapati Shivaji 'Maharaj' Terminus.

The Shiv Sena has pressed for changing the British era names of seven suburban railway stations in Mumbai, giving them a local touch. A delegation of Shiv Sena leaders met Union Home minister Rajnath Singh in New Delhi yesterday to take up the demand, party sources said today.
