All diesel vehicle that will complete 10 years on January 1, 2022 will be deregistered by Delhi's transport department. Owners of said vehicles will be given a No Objection Certificate (NOC) allowing them to re-register the vehicle in other places.

The National Green Tribunal has or NGT has refused to modify its order directing the deregistration of diesel vehicles in Delhi-NCR which are over 10 years old.

The Delhi government told the Supreme Court on Thursday that out of 1.10 crore vehicles registered in the national capital, 40 lakh "overage" vehicles -- more than 15 years in case of petrol and 10 years for diesel -- have been de-registered by the transport department.

With Delhi's air quality turning 'severe' on Tuesday, the transport department issued a notice warning that 15-year-old petrol and 10-year-old diesel vehicles plying on the city roads in violation of Supreme Court and NGT orders will be impounded.

The government on Tuesday announced it will soon file a review petition against the National Green Tribunal's order to ban diesel vehicles that are over 10 years old and take several other measures to pacify agitating farmers and address their concerns.

NGT noted that VW has recalled only 64 per cent of the affected cars as undertaken by it and 36 per cent of the polluting vehicles are still on the roads.

The tribunal was hearing pleas filed by a school teacher Saloni Ailawadi and a few others seeking ban on sale of its vehicles for alleged violation of emission norms.

Apart from it, the Uttar Pradesh Pollution Control Board has also issued strict instructions to a dozen departments to reduce pollution in Uttar Pradesh. On October 17, The Environment Pollution Prevention and Control Authority on banned diesel generators in Delhi, barring those used in metros and hospitals.

The Green Tribunal has dismissed Centre's plea seeking modification of its ban order on diesel vehicles, arguing that one diesel vehicle causes pollution equal to 24 petrol vehicles and 40 CNG vehicles.

Volkswagen India had in December 2015 announced the recall of 3,23,700 lakh vehicles in India to fix the emission software after Automotive Research Association of India (ARAI) conducted tests on some models and found that their on-road emissions were 1.1 times to 2.6 times higher than the applicable BS-IV norms.
